during 10th century then travelled to Afghanistan and India. After
origination and development of Urdu in India, about three hundred years ago,
it captivated Indian masses. Many languages like Gujarati and Marathi got
attracted to this form of poetry. In Guajarati, origination of Ghazal is
less than 100 year old. However, it has made tremendous inroads in Gujarati
literature. Guajarati Mushaeras are very frequent. There have been 1000s of
Gujarati poets who have composed Ghazals. Gujarati Ghazals are thought
provoking and are of high quality. Though in Gujarati, Ghazals have adopted
Urdu tradition; it is different in terms of Idioms, Allegories, and similes
that reflect local culture. The subjects of verses of Gujarati Ghazals are
many times strikingly different than Urdu and Farsi. Hindu poets bring
analogy from their scriptures, their Gods, and their mythology.
Here are tracks from album Sanvedan (compassion) by a Gujarati poet Kamlesh
Sonawala. Ghazals are sung by famous singers like Mitali Singh, Roopkumar
Rathod, Hari Haran, Sadhna Sargam, Gohil, Pandit, Upadhyay, and Bhupendra
Singh. Bhai Kamlesh, in his Ghazals, uses simple day to day words and
conveys huge meaning. In that respect he remind me Urdu poet Mir Taqi Mir.
The passion in his Ghazals jumps out to listener’s heart. His Ghazals are
full of romance and reminds poet Akhtar Shirani who is called Keats/Shelly
of Urdu. Music of one Ghazal: Har mohabbat na itihas na…. seems to be
after Begum Akhatar’s famous Ghazal Ae mohabbat tere naam pe rona aaya.
